The Blue Letter Bible developed a tool, called the LexiConc, that allows users to search the English definitions of Hebrew and Greek words.
A typical question that we receive from people is, "What are the various words for 'love' in the New Testament?" Another question, for example, is, "How do I find out what the Hebrew and Greek is for 'faith'?" The LexiConc would help for determining such queries. The following help tutorial shows how to use the tool.
The first step to using this tool is to find it. The results of a Word Search have four tabs: Primary, Dictionaries, Lexiconc, and FAQs. Click on the Lexiconc Tab.
Notice that there are three options:
The first option, Exact Match, searches the definitions where the string matches an entire word. For 'faith' the only match would be 'faith'.
The second option, Beginning of the Word, searches through English definitions based on the beginnings of the words being searched. So for 'faith' it would find 'faith', 'faithful', 'faithfully', and 'faithless' because all four begin with 'faith'.
The third and final option, Any Part of the Word, searches through English definitions for the string of letters entered—regardless of where it appears in the word. For 'faith' it would find 'faith', 'faithful', 'faithfully', 'faithless', and 'unfaithfully' because five words contain the string 'faith'.
Tip: the LexiConc is not case sensitive.
For sake of the example, let's select the third (default) option and click the blue submit button.
After submitting the form, you are taken to a new page which lists your search results. For our example there are twelve results.
In order to decipher the results, it is important to note that there are two types of words: Hebrew and Greek. The Hebrew words are used in the Old Testament; the Greek words are used in the New Testament. Sometimes certain search criteria will only occur in one of the testaments (e.g., 'singer' is only used in the OT and 'justification' is only used in the NT).
In the results for our example, there are six Hebrew words and six Greek words that match 'faith' in one way or another. They are displayed in a table, showing the Strong's number, the transliterated Hebrew/Greek word, the pronunciation, and the English equivalent.
The Strong's number is an integral part of the BLB. It helps users to access the original languages of the Bible using a non-technical methodology. By clicking on the Strongs number the user is taken to the Lexicon page, which both defines the word and presents every occurrence of it in the Bible.
The second column represents the transliteration of the Hebrew/Greek word using English characters.
The third column contains the pronunciation for the Hebrew/Greek word.
The last column contains various translations of the given Hebrew/Greek word, including the meaning that ties into the word originally entered for the search designated by red, bold face text.
The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
